History of Physical Therapy in northern New Mexico

Physical Therapy in Taos began in the early 1970’s when Cidney Fee, PT, came here from Oklahoma. Several months later Jane Blue Holleman, PT, owner of Air Health Care, Inc. came to Taos and contracted with Holy Cross Hospital; Cidney went to work for Jane, and the Air Health Care staff provided inpatient and outpatient therapy through 1978.

Jane started her company in 1969 from her home base in Denver. She would fly her own plane to the rural communities of eastern Colorado, where PT was not available. She would hitchhike to the hospitals and nursing homes, or arrange for someone to pick her up and drive her to the facilities. She would evaluate and treat patients and set up treatment programs, then she would catch a ride back to the airfield and fly to the next community.

Since Jane was typically in a community only one day a week, she would train a PT aide to follow through on exercise and ambulation programs in the nursing homes in her absence. As the business grew, she began to employ other therapists who would drive out to the communities to provide the therapy services. Once she had facilities and therapists established in the eastern part of the state, Jane gradually added communities and facilities in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.

In the 1970’s, when physical therapy services began at Holy Cross Hospital, the PT Department was established on the ground floor of the north wing at the old hospital. There was a small gym with a mat table, parallel bars, NK table for resisted knee exercises, and back exerciser; 2 general treatment rooms; such modalities as moist hot packs, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound and shortwave diathermy for deep heat; a whirlpool room with a lowboy tank and an extremity tank; and a small office. Being back in the old part of the hospital there was a great deal of character to the building --complete with beautiful carved doors, hand hewn beams and hardwood floors, and of course a ghost. (No story about the old hospital would be complete without a ghost!)

The Air Health Care contract ended the last day of December in 1978. The next contract service was with Southwest PT for about 2 years, during which time Ron Holmes was the PT Supervisor. In late 1980, that contract was dissolved and the PT staff members all became Holy Cross Hospital employees.

In 2001, the Taos Center for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine opened as a dedicated physical therapy center for northern New Mexico; in 2014, they changed their name to the Taos Center for Physical Health and joined Taos Health Systems.

Taos Health Systems incorporated in January 1980 as a 501(c)(3) private, non-profit charitable organization as the parent company of Holy Cross Hospital. THS has since grown to include Women’s Health Institute, Taos Surgical Specialties, the Peñasco Health Clinic, and the Taos Center for Physical Health.
